Each year, the State Historic Preservation Office recognizes achievements in historic preservation by presenting awards in Public Education and Awareness, and Preservation Merit. One of the 2014 Preservation Merit awardees is the American Veterans Heritage Center and the Dayton Veterans Administration Medical Center for preservation of the Grotto at the Dayton Veterans Administration Medical Center.
In addition to the restoration of the Gardens by the Dayton VA Medical Center, the American Veterans Heritage Center developed a partnership with the Ohio State University, Montgomery County Extension Service-Master Gardener to actively maintain and enhance the Grotto Gardens. This collaboration allows the historic gardens to once again become the peaceful place of reflection for our veterans and community. These gardens also support the mission of the American Veterans Heritage Center to preserve the history and personal legacies of American veterans inspiring the community to support and serve its veterans.
